This summer we had a photographer come out to my inlaws’ farm and take pictures of our family. There are several AMAZING pictures of just my 4 year old daughter swinging on a really old swing with sunlight in her hair. I would probably pick one of those. :)

Sometimes I feel like I am the only one in my house that believes that going green should be a lifestyle change. I really despise the terms “getting on the bandwagon” because I feel that simple steps can be taken and formed into lifelong habits.

I was surprised when talking to my husband about global warming the other day and how many people don’t believe in it (about 1/5). I was taken aback that actually agreed with me. We usually do NOT agree on major issues so it was refreshing to see that we are on the same page. In retrospect I realized that he is not as ambitious or vocal as I am about some of our at-home green “initiatives”, but that he has always eagerly agreed to most of my suggestions.

Several people do not believe in global warming. I am not going to go into that too much now. I do believe that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and agree to disagree. I would really need to dedicate a separate post to address that topic and support my stance. I am not as concerned about trying to sell my opinion if in 2007 “in a poll of 2,000 people in 21 countries an average of eight in ten (79%) said {say} that “human activity, including industry and transportation, is a significant cause of climate change.” Obviously I am on the same platform as most other individuals. This post is is about OWNERSHIP – we do NOT own the earth but how we do need to own the responsibility to change what we can and ensure that our individual carbon footprints are minimized.

Back to the topic at hand – So my kids are not the most eager or willing to change. I have tried to explain the importance of recycling and reusing, conserving water, electricity, and wasting less.

Areas of Success:

Recycling – We recycle a large amount of our “trash”. We still discard more than I would like, but are continuously improving.

Using green products to clean the home - I have now totally converted to Green cleaners or make my own. (We won’t count my husband’s one purchase of bathroom cleaner). Outside of that we have not had a non-green household cleanser grace my home in more than a year.

Using green products in the laundry room – Much easier now that so many companies are offering greener laundry products.

Waste not want not – We unplug electrical items not in use, are better about wearing some things twice and we have changed our spending habits. I really consider our need vs. desire when making purchases (this is also better for the budget!).

Areas for improvement:

Reducing water usage – This is the area in my home that needs the most work. I am known for taking very long, very hot showers. 3 kids means a lot of dishwashing, laundry, baths, etc.

Buying local - We need to focus more on buying local – local means less transportation converting to lower emissions IN transport AND fresher products (less time spent sitting on a truck). It also supports the local community.
* Your local farmer’s market is a great source for local, AND organic foods. CSAsCommunity Supported Agriculture- are another option that may work for you and your family.

Buy Natural / Organic – I am starting to change my spending habits and grocery shopping is not excluded. In addition to groceries, I am starting to look at other natural and organic products (clothing,

Composting – I try to avoid using the garbage disposal. I would like learn how to effectively compost instead of throwing waste into the trash bin.

Making my own… - I make my own household cleansers. Now I need to start with my own laundry detergents, bath and body products, natural remedies and more. I recently bought a great book on how to do all this but I really need to sit down and read it.

Growing our own… - One of my goals is to dedicate a good portion of our yard to a vegatable garden next year. I am always jealous when my co-workers bring in their goodies to share – I want to have veggies to share too!

So back to the original topic – how do you get the kids involved?
1) Research what is age appropriate, keeping your goal and your child’s interests in mind
2) Once you find out what is realistic and attainable, involve your child in the project and set a good example by showing enthusiasm.
– Research together and the importance of the change you are making. Look up information on the internet or go to the library.
– Determine what works for your family
– Determine “roles”
3) Talk to other parents / read blogs – find out what works for others.
4) If something doesn’t work, do not give up. Give it more time or make changes to your original plan.
5) Have fun!

Attached are some great resources for involving your child in your efforts to go green at home:

If you have a sucessful story to share, please feel free to post. I would love to hear your ideas and experiences.

Why oh why did I not think of doing this for my wedding?

Thanks to NodinsNest for finding and sharing this!

I was tempted to try and fit it in but in the end I decided NOT to attend her. I felt like I was the onlyone not going to Blogher but apparently I am not. In fact I am at a #Notatblogher twitter party right now.

I also have a chance to win a $100 scholarship so if you read this please post!

OK, so what are my reasons?

1) our family vacation starts this week and I need to pack and clean the house – I mean who would want to miss that?

2) $…. Registration $$…. Plane Fare $$$…. Hotel $$$$…. Food $$$$$…… shopping

3) I have something going on every weekend until Labor day – this is my last free weekend.

4) I would eat too much fab food in Chicago. I need to lose, not GAIN weight.

5) I am too new to blogging – just a little over a year. I may be underqualified to attend.

6) I am not sponsored by anyone nor did I seek sponsorship (next year will be a different story!)

7) I would not be able to attend the fun #notatblogher party on twitter.

8) I would have to pay for another bag when returning home to accommodate the swag (OK – sour grapes here)

9) I would meet bloggers 1/2 my age and wonder “Am I too old to be doing this?”

10) I don’t have to post pictures, facebook, twitter and blog and keep up with my family while trying to network.

so if YOU blog and you are not at blog her either, hurry up and create your own list :) Then post it…. See you next year!

Social Networking has taken the world by storm. As a professional, as a parent, as a woman and as a blogger, I view social networking as a key tool in meeting people and sharing resources.  I use one site for my “day job”, another for friends and another for blogging.  I was recently re-introduced to Gather.com

Gather.com has created a diverse social networking community where you can meet some people around shared interests and unique passions. Have a few interests? You no longer have to go to 2 or 3 different forums. Gather hosts thousands of groups and conversations on topics.  Here are some of the most popular:

What makes Gather different?  On Gather you earn points for the content you contribute to the site – these points which can be redeemed for gift cards to major retailers or for PayPal cash. The more recipes, tips, stories and advice you share with others in the community, the more points you earn. Now that’s a great incentive!

Gather.com is also supportive of charitable causes.  Last year Gather and the Incredible! group (sponsored byu the American Egg Board) invited members to donate points to Share Our Strength®,  a national organization whose goal is to fight hunger in America.  Together they “gather”ed over $4,000 for the cause.

I have been registered with Gather for a while, but have not taken advantage of the social networking capabilities.  I do plan to visit more frequently, post and make my presence known.  The idea of shared interests is very appealing to me as is the opportunity to meet new people, network and earn points on top of it all!

Whether you are new to social networking or a pioneer, Gather.com is worth a visit.  When meeting people with shared interests, it is likely you will be back!

I wrote this review while participating in a blog and giveaway campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Gather. Mom Central sent me a gift card to thank me for taking the time to participate.

Over the weekend Miss C. and I saw the new Harry Potter Movie – Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. I am not sure who was looking forward to it more – me or Miss C. I love HP so much that I insisted she have a Harry themed party instead of a Pokemon one for her 10th bday. I have attended most of the Barnes and Noble parties (kids in tow), read every book, watched every movie, and am so sad this magical road is coming to an end.

For Half Blood I worried less about the movie staying true to the book, missing or underdeveloped, characters, missing “chapters”, etc and just enjoyed the movie.

For a quick refresher Miss C and I watched Movies 4 and 5 before going to see number 6. I must admit that it was helpful – it has been a while since I read the books and I needed to brush up on who’s who outside the muggle world. (Our favorite part in 5 was is the public, classroom rebellion, led by the Weasley Dynamic Duo complete with fireworks, destruction of school property and insubordination).

In The Half Blood Prince it was great to see Harry, Ron and Hermione. I missed my favorite antagonists such as the Dursley clan, and “he who shall not be named” but we got our loathing fix via Team Draco. There was plenty of evil Malfoy action abrewin‘. Helena Bonham Carter was superb – As Bellatrix Lestrange she was beautifully creepy, evil and horrid, taunting and ridiculing Harry at every turn.

A few other brilliant Brits magically appeared. Alan Rickman brought Snape to life again as only Rickman can. We also had the wonderful portrayal of Horace Slughorn by Jim Broadbent (aka Bridgit Jones’ dad) – he showed us a quiet, subtle wizarding opportunist with a conscience but an opportunist nonetheless. Slughorn apparently is not as flamboyant or unethical as Kenneth Branagh’s Gilderoy Lockhart for example, but was just as enjoyable.

Movie Number 5 was more action packed so Miss C. was expecting more mayhem than was given in Half Blood Prince. The subtle (and not so subtle) humor was there though, as it has been all along. Oh, and Romance – can’t forget that. There is a little snoggin‘ going on too. Actually a lot. These are teenagers with raging hormones after all. Jessie Cave deserves a standing ovation, or at least some one on one time with Ron, for her hysterical, teen-angst driven portrayal of Lavender Brown. Despite the snogging, Half Blood Prince was a little darker, deeper and much more depressing, laying the groundwork for the finale(s).

Yes, the final movie will be split into 2 parts and I am thrilled. We can stretch this out just a little longer.
