BigUniverse.com is an innovative literacy website for K-8 students. “This anytime-anywhere site delivers curriculum and tools for learning, assessment, reading and writing development, using a vast library of online books”.
BigUniverse.com has a three-pronged approach: reading, creating and sharing online children’s books. I was very fortunate to be able to review BigUniverse.com. Miss N,. Miss E. and I all took turns navigating the sites. There were several different areas and features to review.
My favorite area was the ability to “check out” publisher books – both fiction and non fiction. With a premium membershop you simply add these to your bookshelf to read. You can search by age, interest, and/or category, etc..
- Take online quizzes, get instant scores and view assessment reports by classroom or students.
- Automatically maintain a reading log.
- There are over 1000 books online; preview samples now.
On my bookshelf (just a sampling of the many titles available):
Fiona’s Luck – a book about how the Irish regained their luck from the leprachauns.
All I see is Part of Me - A new age book about how we are one with the universe – connected to the life, objects and phenomena around us.
The Beatles Graphic Biography – Who says history can’t be fun?
Is a Worry Worrying You? – For the worry wart in all of us.
Using Money on a Shopping Trip- Teach your kids about handling money with responsibility.
BigUniverse is like having a library in your own home! There are countless books created by members. Members can also share and recommend books to others. Miss N and Miss E loved the ability to create, publish and share books with others. Miss N. created a book titled “The Bug Fight”. If you or your child really love a book, click on the link to “buy” and be taken to the publisher site to own your own hard copy!
